When an intensely, pondering poet, draped in a broken-in hollow body guitar and spewing red and raw vocals, as if choking on the sun-baked mud and dust of his subject matter, teams up with a hold no cheap shots (at least behind the kit) kind of drummer-himself awash in sweat, fighting off the rush of blood from his own battered fingers-the live result can only be something that tip toes on the overwhelming. Such is the case with Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel.

Though the two childhood friends hail from San Francisco, Two Gallants' performance at the Blender Theater at the Gramercy would have one believe they were bred on an utterly authentic, rural ruggedness. I suppose it's due to the way their agrarian blend of folk, blues, country, rock, and punk conjure up apocalyptic dust bowl images-think The Grapes of Wrath if you have to. And if you don't rely on such a picture, just know that such intense, tom tom driven folk thrash can set Midwestern hay bails ablaze all the way from New York City.

Few souls burn as intensely as The Veils' Finn Andrews. When the gothic laced mad hatter took the Bowery Ballroom's stage for this performance, he quickly assumed the agonized face that his theatrical, unrestrained, and discontent music so rightfully demands. The Smiths, Stone Roses, Nick Cave, The Cure, and The Clash…the New Zealander and son of former XTC keyboardist Barry Andrews took welcome live musical cues from a host of acts who knew music was no game, but rather a deeply personal and spiritual phenomenon. While it might be slightly misleading, I don’t think the aptly titled Blonde Redhead had devious intentions in mind. Having built a sturdy, longtime foundation on the artful bedrock of noisy, resonant guitar drones, and off kilter tunings, Blonde Redhead earned a reputation as a kind of Sonic Youth lite over the years. But on their latest album, 23, the band favored dream pop, a la Zero 7 or Air. In this sun baked show at the McCarren Park Pool, the band leans hard on the hyper hypnotic, and for good reason. August heat waves have a tendency to release a wash of sweat tickling down the forehead and send one into a hazy headed half euphoria. This lounge ready performance for a bulging, half naked Brooklyn crowd is just the kind of intense, dramatic, and squinty eyed moment worth standing in the middle of an empty, concrete bowl on a Sunday afternoon in August for.

For only their second US show to date, much ballyhooed Swedish band I’m From Barcelona brought 20 members plus to McCarren Park for a ruckus Sunday afternoon pool party. And while some might find it easy to argue that the massive band thing is getting a tad overdone, it is hard to deny the fact that every one of Barcelona’s members chip in to help furnish their nifty cheerleading sound, not to mention contribute to the wildly dynamic performance. Just try and keep up with these kids. While they rollick through “We’re From Barcelona”, “Oversleeping”, “Treehouse”, and “The Painter”, you’ll get lost in a sea of balloons, confetti, bear costumes…hey wait, is that Steve Zissou?...oh, and crowd surfing. Four shows into this, and our Green Rooms keep getting better and better. This time around we sat down with South London band Art Brut, moments before they sent The Bowery Ballroom in to a furious frenzy with their brand of refreshing, British rock and roll. Hosted by industry insider Allison Hagendorf, the Green Room is a 30-min show that takes viewers backstage for close and candid interviews, onstage for the electrifying performance, and out into the crowd for the fans’ glorious reaction.

For our third installment of The Green Room, Baeble Music packed our big city bags for steamy Austin Texas and the annual South by Southwest Music Conference. Held on March 15th, 2007 at Red 7, Baeble welcomed a diverse lineup to perform as part of our monthly concert series, Push Play.

Joining Baeble for in-depth interviews and electric performances were the neo-psychedelia soundings of Hawthorne CA’s DIOS (MALOS), the sweaty, swagger of retro rockers, THE FILMS, fuzz pop aficionados, THE OOHLAS,and the always endearing French electro outfit, PROTOTYPES.

Welcome back! The Green Room's second installment features the orchestrated stylings of Ra Ra Riot, who combine their harmonized voices with cello, violin, keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums. Phew. On February 21, 2006, Ra Ra Riot joined the costumed kids in Mixel Pixel to form the inaugural lineup for Push Play, Baeble's monthly concert series. This kickoff Push Play event was held in The Canal Room, where VIPS mingled behind the soundboard while audience members danced up front.
