Ra Ra Riot
Ra Ra Riot Ra Ra Riot. Such an appropriate name.

The cheerleader-esque "Ra ra" chant evokes images of high school, all of which can be found in this youthful band. You've got your photogenic prom queens on violin and cello. Your shaggy-haired Drama Club Stud on vocals. Your lovable athletic jock on drums. Your wacky class clowns on guitar and bass.

And there's the "Riot" part, which comes close to describing this six-piece's blend of controlled chaos. The songs combine distorted guitar, fat bass, keyboards, orchestrated strings, and vocals. Mix the Arcade Fire with Devo and some coverpage-worthy good looks, and you wouldn't be too far from Ra Ra Riot's enjoyable racket.

bio

[Sometimes, the band members themselves write the best bio. Read Ra Ra Riot's own words below.]

Ra Ra Riot is an amorphous blob (read as: band) that consists of six highly dedicated individuals, each bringing her/his own experiences as both people and musicians to the metaphorical table. We feel strongly about moving people physically and mentally as a means of affecting positive micro/macrocosmic change. Formed and currently based in Syracuse, NY, Ra Ra Riot spends its time shaking the hands of foreign dignitaries, practicing, playing shows, eating pizza, and going about the business of everyday life. We have only existed since January 2006 C.E., an infant in that sense, but already have developed significantly as people and musicians. We look forward to seeing how the sound morphs as we hit adolescence and the subsequent teen years. We invite you to come along on this journey of growth and self-discovery. Word up.

press

Hailing from New York, encompassing guitar, cello, violin, keyboards, drum n bass, and possessing the best song we heard all week (the giddy, giggly “Anthony”), Ra Ra Riot were an absolute hoot. NME danced, NME sang!
- NME

From "Eleanor Rigby" to Wilco's "Jesus, etc.," strings almost always give rock music a layer of melody that enhances guitar and bass, and Ra Ra Riot has that in every song. The six-person group was too big to fit on Midway's small stage, so Allie Lawn and Mathieu Santos took their cello and bass to the audience, visually matching the band's full and multi-layered sound.
